10 Fun Activities To Do With Your Kids: All Ages

Well, friends, we’re back. Goober is a year older (so am I, but that’s irrelevant) and he’s even more on the move than he’s ever been. Last year, I had the opportunity to take a job as a teacher in a local daycare center. I seized that opportunity and hit the ground running so fast, I kind of forgot to look back at this blog. Now, with the dreaded Covid-19 quarantine looming over us, I feel a lot more prepared than I would had I not started teaching. (I primarily teach in the 4-5 age group, but I frequently visit the younger age groups as well). So straying from our original “Books First” focus, I have prepared a list of some fun things to do if you’re spending a LOT of time home with your kids!

Review: Jabulani, By: Jonathan J Stotler

A small glimpse into the life of a young boy in the Ndebele Tribe of the Republic of South Africa, the story of Jabulani teaches the very important lesson that sometimes, the smallest acts are the most important ones.

Comparing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom VS Hogwarts Interactive Wands

Last year, my family took a trip to the Orlando, Florida area. We spent considerable amounts of time in both Magic Kingdom AND The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and had absolutely magical times at both locations. You may have noticed that both Disney and Universal Studios have similar free-range interactive attractions; Disney World has the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom in Magic Kingdom, and Universal has the Interactive Wands in both sections of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Both of these experiences are fun and unique in their own ways, but if you were ever wondering which is better, this is the comparison list for you!

Review: Children in our World- Racism and Intolerance by Louise Spitsbury and Hanane Kai

“Sometimes we hear words in the news and it’s hard to understand what they mean and how they affect us.” These are the words printed on the back of Children in our World: Racism and Intolerance, and they’re a sentiment that the BookwyrmMama household understands all to well.
It’s always difficult to have a discussion with your children about racism and intolerance. It’s never easy or simple to discuss injustices in our world, but the impact of having these conversations early and frequently impossible to ignore. Books like “Children in our World” could help ease into those hard to bring up discussions and make conversations a little bit easier.

DIY E-Reader Stand

Well, I can never have too many book themed decorations (especially if the book in question is Harry Potter!) and I really needed something to hold my Kindle Fire standing up while I was reading recipes, so I dug out some of my general crafting supplies and put together this SUPER cool one! Check out how I did it below!

Trading Screen Time for Me Time

Raising young readers is hard. It has always been hard, and as society progresses, we will continue to see new challenges erupt in trying to get our children to love reading. We’ve already posted a few pointers in getting your kids into reading, but how do we get them to trade out that screen time (tablets, phones, computers, TV) without an all out war breaking out in your home? Here, we’ll go over some awesome ways to decrease your kids time using tech and substitute for other activities (not just reading! Crafting, playing, cooking, and others are all VERY important for development!) Keep reading to find out my techniques and ideas, and make sure to add some other tips and tricks in the comments!

My New Years Resolutions

What kind of blog would I be if I didn’t list out my New Years Resolutions for everyone? I don’t mean my personal goals (ahem, exercise more!) I do mean my book goals. This past year, I did a huge revamp of the blog, incorporating recipes, crafts, and product lists, and I think they are going very well. I also have a few reading and writing goals for 2019, and I’m VERY excited to share them with you!

January Book Per Month

It’s the first month in our 2019 attempt to expand our views beyond our favorite library shelves, and the first month is (Drumroll) Motivation and Self Help. I chose this primarily because I bought myself a Hygge book a few months ago, and I’ve been slacking on it. Really slacking. So in order to motivate myself, I’m using it as inspiration to get moving in the upcoming year. I’ll let you know how it goes, everyone!

Our Top Reads of 2018

Well, all, it’s the end of the year. And we thought we’d look back on our absolute FAVORITE books from 2018.  Some of them are from indie authors, some were read by Guppy, but either way, these were the books that impacted us the most in 2018. Maybe we’ll have more next year! But here’s the round up!

One Book A Month

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Rachel, I read WAAYY more than one book a month (and so do I, obviously!), but this project is different. Instead of staying in our favorite sections of the library, content to read the same style of story over and over again, what we should be doing is expanding and growing our tastes. And so, this year, I am resolving to read at least one book in a different genre every month. Some I will be excited for, and others…I may dread. But they will be read, and processed, and reviewed and hopefully, I’ll grow or something! (PS the kids are doing this challenge too, they just don’t know it yet….) Don’t forget to comment on this post, OR tag us (here or on social media) when you complete a book! Use #bwmbookamonth to let us know your progress!
