Independent Activities for Young Kids

Whether you’re working from home, or home is your work, sometimes you just need a couple of minutes to yourself. While your young child may not usually be willing to play nicely in the next room so  you can have a moment of peace, you may be able to convince them by providing some fun quiet activities that don’t require you to play along side of them.

10 Fun Activities To Do With Your Kids: All Ages

Well, friends, we’re back. Goober is a year older (so am I, but that’s irrelevant) and he’s even more on the move than he’s ever been. Last year, I had the opportunity to take a job as a teacher in a local daycare center. I seized that opportunity and hit the ground running so fast, I kind of forgot to look back at this blog. Now, with the dreaded Covid-19 quarantine looming over us, I feel a lot more prepared than I would had I not started teaching. (I primarily teach in the 4-5 age group, but I frequently visit the younger age groups as well). So straying from our original “Books First” focus, I have prepared a list of some fun things to do if you’re spending a LOT of time home with your kids!

Best Reading Teacher Gifts (that aren’t a #1 Teacher Mug)

I know a LOT of teachers, of all different grades. And let me tell you how many of the SAME teacher gifts they have. (Mugs, Tumblers, Pictures of Students, Picture Frames, Apple Statues, you get the picture) But if you REALLY want to show your appreciation for your kid’s teacher, why not get them something unique and useful. (You really only need like…4 mugs, and that’s being generous. Seriously, everyone, STOP WITH THE MUGS ALREADY!) Here is the BookwyrmMama list of better Teacher gifts!

Book Round Up: 5 Books (Kind of) About Spaghetti!

In honor of our recipe this week, I’ve put together a list of books you can read while eating SPAGHETTI. This list is a great reference for home school curriculums, book parties, themed days at libraries or schools, or just for adding some whimsy to your weekly spaghetti day! (I’m not the only one who has spaghetti day weekly, right?)

Cook With a Book: Strega Nona!

Every once in a while, a book resonates with you. Whether it’s full of life advice, it’s funny, the protagonist is relate-able, it’s full of magic, or something else, the book strikes you to the core. When a picture book does that, it’s easy to replace it’s profound effect with new memories and feelings as you grow. I always come back to the books I once loved. Guppy has read nearly every series I did when I was her age (And even a bit older! Over achiever…), and now I’m reading the same books I read to her to Goober. Hopefully, he loves them as much as I do.

Easing Into Reading For FUN!

Guppy wasn’t always such an avid reader. She used to HATE reading! At one point, my own mama (Affectionately dubbed “Rachel’s Mom” by Guppy…as in “Rachel, Guess what I did at Rachel’s Mom’s house this weekend!”) told me “You need to get her to love reading as much as you did.” When I asked her how she fostered that love of reading in me she said “I don’t know. Just read to her, I guess.”
Long story short “Just read to her” did not work all by itself. But here are some ideas that did for your own reluctant readers.
